Faith Resources Newsletter - Number 65 - September 2016

Many souls go to Hell because they have no one to pray and make sacrifices for them. Our Lady of Fatima

Message from the Manager
Welcome to our September 2016 Newsletter. There are a great number of wonderful events happening in these delightful spring months and some amazing people out there who are doing great things for the community. Some of our readers are welcoming new members into their families through the Sacrament of Matrimony and the Sacrament of Baptism with so many becoming parents, grandparents, great grandparents and one proud and excited lady welcoming her second great, great grandchild. As well, there seems to be many more children brought to the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation this year. Sharing in the joy of these wonderful events gives us hope and happiness.
We must not lose sight, however, of the fact that in our midst evil is masquerading as good and good is being portrayed as being evil especially in the media, in our schools and even by some members of our parliament. Compassion is not about accepting sin; it is about loving the sinner and helping them overcome their sin and bringing them to the Sacrament of Confession. In most cases it will not mean confrontation but it will mean an extraordinary amount of prayers and sacrifices.
Gabriele Kuby whose book, The Global Sexual Revolution, exposes the very real forces behind the evil agenda to destroy the family, visited Australia recently and many people came to hear her speak. Her book is available from us. People who stand up for God and for His Glory will suffer much. We must therefore support her by urging our friends and neighbours to pray hard that many who are indifferent or have been brainwashed will continue to be helped by her presence. With this in mind, our reading and children’s reading should help all to know love and serve God.
Thank you for your wonderful support and please continue as we rely heavily on your prayers, voluntary help and financial sacrifices.

The Global Sexual Revolution by Gabriele Kuby
Gabriele Kuby surveys gender ideology and LGBT demands, the devastating effects of pornography and sex-education, attacks on freedom of speech and religion, the corruption of language, and much more. She documents in meticulous detail how the tentacles of a budding totalitarian regime are slowly gripping the world in an insidious stranglehold. Kuby’s courageous work is a call to action for decent people to redouble their efforts to preserve freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and in particular the freedom of parents to educate their children according to their own beliefs, so that the family may endure as the foundation upon which any healthy society is built.
The Global Sexual Revolution by Gabriele Kuby $28.00
Flight of Faith My Miracle on the Hudson by Frederick Berretta
Recently attention has been given once more in the film Sully to the accident involving the US Airways Airbus A320-200, registration N106US which performed flight US-1549 on 15th January 2009. Frederick Beretta was a passenger on that flight and possibly the first to recount what happened - his book was published in 2009. Berretta's perspective is entirely different to that of the secular media and his description of the profound call he had from God during the time it took the aircraft to glide down to the Hudson River is very thought-provoking.

The Golden Princess and Moon by Anna Maria Mendell
Book review by Lucy Smith
The Golden Princess and the Moon is a book which I highly enjoyed reading. From the moment I picked it up, I could hardly bear to put it down, and I finished reading it in just one day. The engaging characters of the Prince and Princess draw the reader into sympathy with them in a very accomplished manner, and the characterisations are perfect. Anna Maria Mendell gives Rosa and Erik the typical characterisations expected of a fairy-tale Prince and Princess, but is unhesitating in also showing their flaws, short-comings, weaknesses, bad decisions and mistakes. This allows the reader to become far more engaged in the characters’ journey and development, and along with other elements within the piece, gives the audience a strong impression reminiscent of the works of C.S. Lewis, the Brothers Grimm, and George MacDonald. The vision of the beauty and peril of Faerie which Mendell presents shows the audience a magical world which, in this reader’s honest opinion, is far more engaging and fascinating than any audience could have ever hoped for. All in all, ten out of ten, will definitely read again.
The Golden Princess and Moon by Anna Maria Mendell $27.50

The Angels of Gum Tree Road by Sue Elvis
Book review by Fr Tierney
The reader needs to know that the Angels are not the ones in Heaven but a big Catholic family, living semi-rural and homeschooling.
This is a sequel to The Angels of Abbey Creek yet can still be read first. The family are Mum, Dad, Edward 15, Kate 13, Joe 11, Celeste 8, Lizzie 6 and Annie 3.
There are delightful episodes on various pets that run, fly or swim. There are lots of episodes with neighbours and excursions with relatives, plus sport and accidents and scrapes the children get into. There's lots of eating described in detail -- essential for children's fiction based on real life. The children are not always good, and Mum and Dad have their foibles.- sounds real, doesn't it?
Liturgical life from the parish overflows into the home without the book being in any way "preachy". It simply presents normative Christianity which is now so politically incorrect, even in fiction, with hostility towards religion having any effect on life, which is, of course, the whole point of religion.
In fact, there's a Confirmation and a Baptism in the family, and a wedding in the extended family with the feminine interest in dresses and the male interests in banquets. There are Lent and Advent details, with eye-openers which might well be emulated.
I'm in the book as author of the Bush Boys and get two chapters of several families combining for a day at a book launch of New Boys in the Bush run by the parish priest who is a Bush Boys supporter.
The daughters in these families are fully catered for along the lines of the bush activities of the girls in Bush Boys and Bush Rangers.
With The Angels of Abbey Creek and a further sequel promised in the last chapter, these books are comparable to Hilda Van Stockum’s three books on the Mitchells, both series drawn from real life experiences. They ring true.
Each chapter is introduced with a half-page line drawing, all beautifully homely on scenes from the text.
Episodic chapters about 8 pp each are ideal for reading aloud at the dinner table or bedtime. This book is a sheer delight: 2l6pp, A4 size, and worth every cent of $20.
The Angels of Gum Tree Road by Sue Elvis $20.00

Sixty Saints for Girls by Joan Windham
This book has been reprinted and contains all her stories of girl and woman saints from her other books, with a number of new ones added. The stores are arranged by date, beginning with Our Lady’s mother, St. Anne, and finishing with another Anne, Anne de Guigne (this Anne, who died in 1922, aged 10, has not been canonized, but she was declared Venerable on March 3, 1990 by Pope John Paul II). In between is a lovely mix of saints, young and old, princesses and pilgrims, mothers and grandmothers and nuns: a goose-girl and a horse-dealer’s daughter; a girl who was kidnapped by pirates, a veterinarian, and (believe it or not) a ventriloquist!  These stories are ideally suited to inspire readers to fall in love with virtue. No child reading them will ever suppose that saints are all cut to one pattern or that holiness is less interesting than bad behaviour. Anyone who wants to know what a saint is really like will get a clear and beautiful picture by reading these accounts, and they can be enjoyed over and over again by children of all ages, and by adults alike. (We are awaiting the reprint of the boy’s book which we have been informed is in the pipeline and will be available before Christmas.)

GOOD NEWS!
New Boys Go Bush Again is now on our website. Click link on the homepage and you will find it in groups of three or four chapters at a time. Printing is permitted. A print version is coming. First of all it is an outdoor adventure. Its setting is politically incorrect: stable marriage, big family, manners, mischief and daring-do.
Its appendices are a big upgrade on those in Bush Boys on the Move, especially the appendix on Home Tutoring/Educating/Schooling.
Another project, partly a hobby, is writing more of New Boys' Bush Rescue, which is a sequel to New Boys Go Bush Again, on the Lawson family.
I’M up to my ears in work on so many projects from which time is lost each day on peripheral phone calls. Requests keep coming in for ‘demolition material’ to refute trendy doctrine or morals or to support this or that worthy cause. Yet my memory, hearing and sight are slithering downhill.
The project that suffers most yet of greatest import is the Catholic Family CatechIST (sic) for parents and others who are teaching from the Catholic Family Catechism Disciples’ Edition.
Yet this is displaced by an immediate need for a new edition of the 1982 Heart Speaks to Heart Revised Edition. It might be called the Millennium Edition until something comes up with a better name. The Mass texts need replacing and a better I want translation of the Psalms than the Grail as used in the present responsorial psalms at Mass and throughout the Liturgy of the Hours, i.e. the Divine Office).
The 1982 Heart Speaks to Heart itself replaced the original of 1979 (in a pamphlet size), which in turn replaced Lift up your Heart which Father Brian Moore SJ produced in 1973 with a reprint in 1974.
All these prayer books preceded my computer acquaintance from 1986, so I have to scan in the earlier material — with lots of correction from scanning mistakes, yet quicker than my typing.
Given my other duties I cannot hope to get in more than three hours work a day and this is eaten into by phone calls (a least an hour a day) or writing answers to letters, all of which eat into my prime time 0900 to 1300 when my mind is not too tired. Sometimes I get up early between 0200 and 0330 if 1 wake early (lights out at 2000).
As for correspondence, if I don’t answer at once, it gets displaced by new arrivals and forgotten. And Cardinal Newman Faith Resources Inc need a monthly Handouts for the internet version, while still posted out, three or four, at a time every three months.
The Media
IN the Old Testament, the Witch of Endor summoned up the ghost of Samuel for Saul.
She was called a ‘medium’, and means of access to the occult. Our word ‘media’ is simply the Latin plural of ‘medium’. Are today’s mass media and social media might be a form of witchcraft?
Mass Media (a sample of a minor apostolate)
To the Editor of the local paper:
BEST TO BET ON GOD
Some agnostics, atheists and other irreligious persons would like everyone to convert to them and thereby ensure peace in the world — an attitude not unlike that of converting others to God and Godliness.
A good test of any religious or non-religious faith is which is the most noble in its teaching and practical results. The more noble the teaching, the harder it will be to practise and the more shocking the failures. Not surprisingly, people struggle with Christianity. We have to love our enemies and those who hate us, and alas, sometimes we find ourselves hating even our friends!
Pascal, who lent his name to air pressure in tyres, was given to gambling. He reckoned it was best to bet on God since we would never know if we were wrong! At least, that’s a starting point for enquiry.
Father James Tierney Catholic Family Catechism
Social Media
(from press clipping service of Father Bernie McGrath This sketch about Face Book probably came from it. Its grammar has been edited to help those unfamiliar with its lack of schooling as displayed in that medium.)
For those of my generation who do not and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles: Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell a passerby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom, and give them pictures of my family, my dog, and me gardening, taking the apart in the garage, taking thing apart in tire garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch and doing what everybody does every day.
I also listen to their conversations, give them the “thumbs up” and tell them I like them, and it works just like Facebook.
I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigation, and a psychiatrist.
Father Tierney’s Comment (it isn’t on Facebook):
Is Face Book the ultimate in trivial pursuit — or is it a means of evangelization?
Is it just good clean fun — or psycho-manipulation by demagogues to lynch their enemies?
Is it a healthy develop of Pen Pals — or a Stranger- Danger, corrupting thought, conscience and conduct?
Or it possibly all of these at once?
Is healthy caution required? Should we apply the motto of Jungle Warfare, “Constant Vigilance and Eternal Suspicion”?
Media Evangelism Again
ACCORDING TO the old Sunday School song, the best book to read is the Bible.
So once upon a time a boy [guess who?] wagged Sunday School by pretending to be sick, and offered to sit in the wintry sunshine and start reading the Bible from Genesis, which means the Beginning.
Genesis was chock-a-block with good and evil, ranging from the noble to the obscene, from God to the Devil.
Some was inspiring. Let there be light. Increase and multiply and fill the earth. Tend the Garden and keep it. Not good for man to be alone. Jacob served seven years for Rachel and they seemed but a few days because of the greatness of his love. Lots of parental affection.
On the other hand there was murder, slavery, masturbation, rape, sodomy, fornication, prostitution, incest, polygamy, theft, lies, false witness, false pretences, sibling rivalry, jealousy. Wow!
And life in society. Big government, centralized economy. A high-rise tower, fire, flood, famine. Tragic infertility. Remarkable obstetrics and animal husbandry. Sharp bargaining, even with God!
Actually, it’s just like today. All that’s missing is abortion and euthanasia, where we have sunk lower.
However we are also far better off, with a Saviour from sin, His moral code and power-packages to live Godly lives.
It’s a starting point for enquiry.
MAKING MOTHERS
Nothing is the same as matrimony.
While the word “marriage” comes from the making of a husband, “matrimony” says more, for it means the making of a mother.
Only a woman can be a mother. Only a man can make her so. One young man’s proposal of marriage was, “Can you hear the pitter patter of little feet on the floor?”
No substitute is possible for matrimony. Nothing has equality with marriage.
It’s one of God’s greatest inventions, a living symbol of His union with creation, with humanity, and with His Church. It’s a symbol which makes His purpose present from generation to generation. Without such a vision, the people perish.
